Rap superstar Nicki Minaj paid tribute to the life and legacy of the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin after news spread of the legend’s passing on August 16, 2018. Minaj opened her third episode of Queen Radio (Beats 1 Radio) with Say a Little Prayer by the late singer and later spoke to co-host Zane Lowe about the influence Franklin had over her life.
“One of the first songs I learned in school was R-E-S-P-E-C-T. That song is a staple in everyone’s childhood,” Minaj stated before playing the song for millions of listeners.
Minaj was later joined by songstress Alicia Keys, who again paid tribute to Franklin’s life with a live rendition of (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman. The singer also shared fond memories of her several encounters with Franklin and the impact that she had on her own music.
In addition to paying tribute to the Queen of Soul, Minaj also discussed the latest updates for the NickiHndrxx Tour, revealing that tour rehearsals will begin the day after MTV’s Video Music Awards air on August 20, 2018, 9pm EST. She then brought several of her fans in to the studio to discuss their favorite tracks on her latest album, Queen (in stores now).
Finally, the rapstress took the time to debunk rumors of animosity surrounding her latest hit single Barbie Dreams and explain that several rappers mentioned reached out to her with praise for the track that can be heard here:
